I am writing this letter to ask for your help in identifying any of your graduating senior athletes or staff members who might be interested in becoming a high school official in any sport. The average age of officials in Michigan as reported by the MHSAA is 54 years of age. Each year we see a number of officials retiring from officiating, and we are having trouble filling all of our OK Conference officiating needs. It doesn’t matter what the sport, we are in need of new officials in all areas.
Please talk to your senior athletes and fellow staff members to see if they are interested, and if so let your school’s AD know if the person is interested. The MSHAA is allowing each school to provide two free registrations fees for new officials. Your AD has the information. Also, the OK conference is looking at providing up to $50 for uniforms needed by new officials to get started. Another selling point is that our official associations are willing to work and train the new officials in getting started in their respective sport so they can be mentored properly.
High School athletics play an important role in the development of the student athletes and in our school communities. Officials are a very important part of our OK Conference high school athletics, and if we don’t have enough officials to cover our sports, all will suffer, especially the lower levels. Please check around with your senior athletes to see if anyone is interested and provide the name to your high school AD.
