Game Recap

The Sailors moved this week to 12-3 on the season and are still in a 3 way tie for 1st in the OK Gold with East Grand Rapids and G.R. Christian H.S. This week the Sailors went 2-1 with a big 3-2 win Tuesday night over Wyoming, a win tonight 3-1 over Wayland and a 4-0 loss to East Kentwood Monday night.
Tonight the Sailors got on the board early with a great take by Matt Hubbard who beat numerous defenders and then hit a hard low shot off the wet grass. The keeper got his body on it but could not wrap it up and it spun into the goal for a 1-0 lead. That was his 2nd goal like it this week. Shortly after the Sailors scored a break-a-way goal off a great header from Zach Dekock that fed Sam DeVries who calmly played the ball underneath a diving keeper. South had other opportunities but could not find the back of the net to go into half at 2-0.
The conditions were wet and sloppy at the SCHS sports park tonight and the Sailors knew there was a lot more soccer left to be played. The Wildcats came out hungry in the 2nd half and put high pressure on the Sailors. Nick Miedema came up with 5 saves and held on tight to a lot of hard balls played at him. 16 minutes into the half Derek Seif flicked a header onto Zach Dekock for a break-a-way that gave the Sailors a 3-0 lead. With 3 minutes left in the half the Sailors were called for a penalty in the box that gave Wayland a penalty kick for their only goal of the game.
The Sailors have a big week next week with games vs the OK Gold co-leaders. Tuesday at GR Christian at Eagle Stadium at 7:30 pm and Thursday night at home at 6:45 pm vs. East Grand Rapids.
