We asked you which cross country boys runner had the best finishing kick, and almost 5,000 votes later you gave us the answer.

In a two-way vote, South Christian standout Micah VanderKooi edged out East Grand Rapids runner Evan Bishop by 166 votes to claim the top spot.

VanderKooi garnered 31.05 percent of the vote, or 1,443 votes, to push past Bishop’s 1,287 votes (27.69 percent).

The freshman garnered a personal-best time of 16 minutes, 55.7 seconds at the Sept. 24 Cougar Falcon Invite. That was 20 seconds below his previous best of 17:15.9, set three days earlier at the second OK Gold Jamboree.

Bishop, a freshman for the Pioneers, started out with a 17:28.5 at the Aug. 19 Wayland Wildcat race. Since then, he has constantly lowered his times into the 16-minute area. Bishop ran a 16:13.2 at the Otsego Invitational.

Rockford junior Cole Johnson, who ran a 15:33 at last month’s Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, finished third with 542 votes.

Dylan Sykes (Catholic Central) and Luke Noah (Middleville) rounded out the top five.
