In the first match-up of the season, South Christian battled Hudsonville in a tight game which eventually ended in a 5-6 overtime loss. The late game woes continued for the Sailors in the second tilt against the Eagles. After playing to a 3-3 tie in the first half, the Sailors came out flat in the second half. Hudsonville scored the go-ahead goal just over a minute into the 3rd quarter and from there they never faltered, pulling away to a 11-7 win.
Offensive zone possession was key for the Sailors. In the first half, they managed to keep the ball on their half of the field and used a balanced passing attack to wear down the Hudsonville defense. The Sailors never held the lead, but battled back every time Hudsonville managed to find the back of the net. In the second half, the Sailors rarely held possession and the Eagles used their speed to set up a lethal transition game the ended up burying the Sailors.
SC was led by Bobby Zeichman’s hat trick. Fellow attacker Sam Bouman added two and Derek Woltjer broke his scoring drought, finding the twine twice as well.
The Sailors play next home on Monday, May 7 against FHN/FHE.
