Just three weeks ago- the SC freshman team lost two games by a large margin to the Scots of Caledonia, losing 3-18 and 0-22. Yesterday, the Sailors surprised Caledonia by coming out strong and giving them a run for their money. The Sailors trailed 0-3 after 2 innings in the first game, when the tides turned. Savannah Potgeter, Anna Mingerink, and Marissa Smits all reached the bases with singles, and Carlie Boomsma reached on an error. Ashley Carver had a clutch hit to the right field fence with the bases loaded and was able to stretch the hit into a grand slam, putting the Sailors up 5-3. Caledonia came back in the 4th inning by scoring 7, making the score 3-10. The Sailor’s answer was too little too late by scoring just one more when Boomsma was batted around the bases by Mingerink and Smits. The Sailors fought hard again during the second game, keeping the score tied 2-2 after innings. Savannah Potgeter laid down a key bunt in the 3rd inning, reaching third base and scoring Ashley Carver with solid base running and put the Sailors up 3-2. Caledonia followed with a big inning, and ended up winning 9-3. Jessie Walters pitched the first game, and Ashley Carver the second. The Sailors seek to win two games tonight against Rockford at the SC Sports Park.
