Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke University has been quoted as saying a basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist. And that is how the SCHS JV boys played Thursday night against the Holland Christian Maroons. It was in stark contrast to the second half of the Zeeland West game 2 days earlier. The Sailors played like everyone knew they could, with aggressive defense, crisp passing and really playing like a team. After being tied at 10 midway through the first quarter, South began exerting itself, especially on defense, and ended the quarter leading 19-9, despite having Sam Heyboer on the bench with 2 fouls 2 minutes after the start of the game. South then began to hit a few three pointers, and took a 34-18 lead into the locker room.
It was the Eric VanVoorst show in the 2nd half, putting in 14 of his game high 23 points, and the Sailors went on to win quite handily , 69-43. As a team, the Sailors made 8 three pointers. Matt Diemer had a personal best game with 11 points, including 2 triples, followed by Evan Beukema with 10, Sam Heyboer with 9, Zack Sinnema 5, Ryan Veenstra 4, and 2 each for Jeff Plasman, Luis DeKryger, Nick Bosch and Nate VanSolkema.
Next up for the Sailors is a trip to Middleville TK on Tuesday evening, Jan.15, at 5:30.
