In a rare Saturday contest, the freshman girls basketball team handed the Wayland Wildcats squad its first loss of the season. Since West Michigan’s wild February weather has forced both squads to reschedule games, the only possible date for the OK-Gold Conference match-up was on a sunny and cold Saturday morning.
The Sailors took firm control of the game, jumping out to an early lead which would stretch to a 21-8 advantage by halftime. The Sailors would increase the lead a bit in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 6-5. It was a lead that proved impossible to overcome, even with the Wildcats outscoring the Sailors in the fourth quarter 12-9.
The victory was an all-around effort by the Sailors, with every player making contributions on each side of the ball. Zoie Hulst led the Sailor scoring, with 9 points. Kaitlin VanderYacht netted 7 points, with Stephanie Woltjer adding 6 points to the effort.
The OK-Gold Conference play will continue as the Sailors travel to Catholic Central, before hosting Ottawa Hills and Hastings next week in the final games of the season.
