The Lady Sailors ran into the first of state championship-caliber softball programs, and the Caledonia Fighting Scots lived up to their #1 ranking in the State of Michigan. South came up on the short end of the doubleheader, 12-2 and 10-0.
In the first game Caledonia scored 1 in the first, 1 in the second, 3 in the third, 4 in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth to close the game under mercy rule. The Scots tallied 14 hits, paced by 2 home runs. South scratched out 2 runs in the fourth on doubles by Maddy Baar and Kendra Kuiper, followed by a Hannah Wolfert single. Lauren Teitsma put an end to the Scots’ fourth with a diving catch into foul territory for the final out. The Sailors tallied 5 hits and Kuiper took the loss.
Game two was a scoreless battle for the first four frames, before the Scots broke out for 3 runs in the fifth, 5 in the sixth and 2 in the seventh. Hannah Wolfert picked up the loss in the nightcap.
Next week Tuesday, the Sailors travel to Ottawa Hills for their first O-K Gold doubleheader against the Bengals, before hosting a scrappy Covenant Christian Chargers squad at South Sports Park on Wednesday.
