On Monday, in a rain-delayed OK Gold Conference final at the South Christan Sports Park, South Christian’s Girls Tennis Team won five out of eight flights to score 43 points in winning the conference tournament. Those 43 points were enough to finish ahead of Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s 40 points and the much improving Thornapple Kellogg Middleville’s 35 points for the title.
Katelyn Dykema and Kendall Christian, both number one seeds in the tournament at three and four singles, held their places and won against the Catholic Central and TK Middleville opponent’s respectively. At one doubles, the 2nd seeded seniors Aubrie Helmus and Nicole Hoekwater won a tightly contested two set final with one seeded Catholic Central while the one seeded three and four doubles teams of Mikayla Battjes and Ellery Boer at three and Kalley Groelsema and Natalie Samdal at four were also able to win their finals.
“I’m very proud of how our whole team played,” commented coach Keith Stulp. “There were lots of close matches and we pulled out many. We only lost three matches in the entire tournament, and it was still very close.”
Olivia Kelly finished third in the tournament at one singles while Mackenzie Wierenga lost in the finals at two singles to finish second overall. Also finishing third in tournament were the second doubles team of Mikayla Jager and Elise DenHartigh.
“It was a very good win for us and shows that we have a balanced and deep team,” added Stulp In recognition of that depth and their success, the conference awarded all-conference status to singles players Olivia Kelly, Mackenzie Wierenga and Katelyn Dykema, and to the doubles team of Nicole Hoekwater and Aubrie Helmus.
Up next for the Sailor tennis girls is the Regional on Friday held at Grand Rapid Christian’s tennis courts.
