Varsity Boys Tennis · All-State Honors for Five Members of Boys Tennis

The awards for the members of the boys tennis team keep coming.  As a team, they won regionals for the first time, and at the state finals, they placed a best-ever 6th place.
For all the team’s success, the state’s tennis coaches association has also recognized five members of the team as all-state or honorable mention.
The #1 doubles team of Jackson Northouse and Jake Springvloed have achieved the highest honor, making the Division 4 All-State team as doubles players.
“I did not expect this kind of success for Jackson and Jake when the season began,” explained Coach Pothoven, “but about two or three weeks into the season, it became apparent to me that they, along with this entire team, were exceeding my expectations.  In fact, I told them midway through the season that they were playing as well as any #1 doubles team I’ve ever coached.”
By the end of the season, when these two claimed their regional title at #1 doubles, entered the state finals as the #4 seed and lived up to those expectations, “I figured they would make All-State,” said Coach P, “and I’m so happy for them that they were recognized in this way.”
What Coach Pothoven did not expect were the surprise awards for his singles players.
Each of his top three singles players, Devin Veldhouse, Josh DeHaan and Avery Brinkert, earned All-State Honorable Mention as singles players.
Said Coach P:  “The fact that Devin received this award was not terribly surprising.  He’s been a 4-year varsity player and our #1 singles player for two years, and this season, he has been outstanding.  Given the conference we are in (three top 10 teams in Division 3), he’s played everyone tough and has beaten many quality opponents.  What came out of the blue was that Josh and Avery were also recognized.  Not that they did not have outstanding season – in fact they have!    They both had stellar won-loss records this year, both are regional champs and both were seeded at State.  But because they did not play #1 singles for us, I just didn’t see this.  But given their success this year, this is very deserved and very exciting for them and for our program!”
Congratulations to each of these athletes for their team and individual successes this season.
