CUTLERVILLE – South Christian is looking to challenge for the OK Gold Conference boys basketball championship this year with an experienced, skilled, and long, tall team running the floor.
The Sailors were 10-11 overall one year ago and finished at 6-6 in the OK Gold Conference.
Coach Jeff Meengs returns four players with decent size and significant playing experience from last season.
That core group includes 6-4 senior forward Trey Vredevoogd, 6-4 junior guard Luke Schroetenboer, 6-4 junior guard Conner Kok, and 6-3 senior forward Andrew Haan.
Senior center Jack Spencer adds even more size as a 6-foot-9 post player.
“We are a very long, athletic team,” Meengs said. “We will have to learn how to play together, both on offense and defense.
“If we play together, our length, athleticism, and skill should allow us to be a difficult team to play against and a fun team to watch.”
The OK Gold features several strong teams that will compete for the title this season, including defending champion Grand Rapids Christian, Wyoming, Wayland Union, and East Grand Rapids. Meengs said the Sailors expect to be right in that mix of those championship contenders.
“We should be competitive in all of the games on our schedule this year, including last year’s league leaders in Wyoming and Grand Rapids Christian,” Meengs said.
