Sailors News · Sailor Cross Country Teams Finish Strong at Christian School Invitational

The South Christian Cross Country team had a home course advantage once again at the Christian School Invitational on Saturday, September 12, 2020.  The team competed against 3 other area Christian schools, as many of the traditional competitors were unable to make the trip due to COVID-19 restrictions.  It was another perfect day for racing with temperatures in the upper 50’s to low 60’s at race time with mostly-cloudy skies.  All teams raced extremely well, with numerous athletes once again earning both season best times and all-time personal records.     

The girls varsity team took third place behind Grand Rapids Christian and Grandville Calvin Christian with 73 points.  The team was led by freshman Ellia Agar coming in 12th with a time of 21:16 and junior Abby Winkle just behind in 13th place with a time of 21:21.  Senior Moriah Lanning was the 3rd Sailor to cross the line in the 15th position with a time of 21:26.  Emily Langerak and Mallory Huttenga were the 4th and 5th ladies to finish with times of 21:29 and 21:39.    

The boys varsity team ended in 2nd place behind Grand Rapids Christian with a score of 49 points.  The boys were led by senior Sam Westra who finished in 5th place with a time of 17:33 and senior Ethan Luurtsema in the 8th position with a time of 17:39.95.  Sophomore Caleb Boes finished in the 9th position with a time of 17:39.96, just one hundredth of a second behind!  Junior Lucas VanDam and senior Hendrik Nykamp were the 4th and 5th Sailors to cross the line with times of 18:06 and 18:12.   

The girls junior varsity team came in first place with a score of 28 points, edging out Grand Rapids Christina by just 1 point!  The JV team was led by freshman Ashleigh Ponstein who raced to a 3rd place finish with a time of 23:25 and sophomore Natalie Bosma just behind with a 4th place finish and a time of 23:29.  Eleven SCHS junior varsity girls finished in the top 15!  

The boys junior varsity team also finished in 1st  place with a score of 27 points.  Luke DeLange battled to a first place finish with a personal-record time of 20:03.  Jackson Gritter finished in the 4th place position with a time of 20:21 (also a personal record) and Ryan Keen crossed the line in the 5th spot with a 20:41.

The Sailors have a quick turnaround with a trip to Thornapple Kellogg on Monday, September 14, 2020 where they will compete against the Hopkins Vikings and the TK Trojans.
