The South Christian High School Sports Complex was the site of the first OK Gold Jamboree of the 2020 season. The expansive property made this venue a perfect place to allow teams plenty of space to socially distance as needed. Unseasonably cool temperatures for early September made for perfect climatological racing conditions, although the heavy rain in the days prior contributed to a soft and muddy course. A 45 minute lightning delay also brought some additional challenges to the race. The realignment of the OK Gold Conference for the 2020-2021 school year brought increased competition with new teams such as Cedar Springs, Kenowa Hills, Catholic Central, and Ottawa Hills added to the mix.
The Sailor men’s team was able to edge out Cedar Springs by only 5 points with a score of 66 to take the first place spot. Caleb Boes was once again the first Sailor to cross the finish line in the 8th position with a time of 17:54. Sam Westra was the next runner to cross the line in the 10th position with a lifetime personal record of 18:03. Hendrik Nykamp was the 3rd South Christian runner to cross the line in the 13th position with a time of 18:09, a lifetime personal record as well. Ethan Luurtsema and Lucas VanDam were the 4th and 5th S.C. runners to finish the race with times of 18:10 and 18:41.
The Sailor women’s team raced hard but came away with a 6th place finish in the conference with a score of 136 points. Leading the way for the ladies was Emily Langerak in the 10th position with a time of 21:27. Halle Overmire was next across the line for the Lady Sailors with a time of 21:44. Abby Winkle, Mallory Huttenga, and Moriah Lanning rounded out the top five finishers for South Christian with times of 21:47, 21:48 and 22:19.
