Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · SCHS XC Teams Look to Improve Conference Standing at OK Gold Jamboree #2

Wayland Middle School was the setting for the second OK Gold Jamboree of the season on Tuesday, September 29.  The Sailor Cross Country teams had an opportunity to improve their standings in the OK Gold Conference, leading up to the championship meet on Tuesday, October 20.  While the course was very challenging, the Sailor teams were motivated by their formidable competitors.

The SCHS varsity men earned a 3rd place conference finish behind Forest Hills Eastern and Cedar Spring with a score of 79 points.  The men’s team was led by Sam Westra who finished in 10th place with a time of 17:51.  Hedrick Nykamp was the second Sailor finisher, battling to earn the 13th spot with a time of 18:00.  Ethan Luurtsema (16th, 18:07), Caleb Boes (18th, 18:22), Lucas VanDam (22nd, 18:38), Ethan Sculley (26th, 18:50), Brandon DeVries (32nd, 19:09) and Caleb Verlin (35th, 19:14) made up the remaining varsity score.

In the boys JV race, Ethan Koeman was the top Sailor athlete to finish.  Ethan crossed the line in the 5th position with a time of 19:41.  Not far behind was Jared Winkle in the 6th position with a time of 19:44.  Joseph VanderKooi was the 3rd Sailor across the line in the JV race finishing in the 8th position with a time of 19:47.  Roman Caulk and Caleb DeVries were the 4th and 5th finishers for the SC JV men, running times of 19:57.8 and 19:58.4 respectively. 

The SCHS varsity women also finished in 3rd place behind Forest Hills Eastern and just 6 points behind Thornapple Kellogg with a score of 98 points.  The girl’s team was led by Emily Langerak who finished in the 14th spot with a time of 21:34.  Abby Winkle held the 2nd spot for the Sailor girl’s team, finishing 18th with a time of 21:52.13.  Moriah Lanning (19th, 21:52.57), Brooklyn Springvloed (23rd, 22:00), Sarah Lanning (24th, 22:02), Mallory Huttenga (26th, 22:08.28), Ellia Agar (27th, 22:08.61), and Lilly Dood (32nd, 22:27) rounded out the top eight. 

Halle Overmire took the lead from the start and came away with a win in the girls JV race,  finishing with a time of 22:12.  Carly Meulenberg had a strong race as well and finished in the 2nd position with a time of 22:37.  Lydia Tolsma was the third Sailor to cross the line in the 4th place spot with a time of 23:03.   Anna Orr (23:04) and Jada VanTol (21:13) were the 4th and 5th SC ladies to finish the JV race.

The South Christian Cross Country Teams have home course advantage once again as they take on the Covenant Christian Chargers on Saturday, October 3.
