The South Christian Cross Country Teams closed out the regular season on Tuesday, October 20 at the OK Gold Conference Championships, hosted by Thornapple Kellogg. With months of training and preparation, both teams were poised to finish competitively within the OK Gold Conference.
The varsity boys team ended the regular season with a 3rd place finish and a score of 86 points. Sam Westra ran a tough race and was able to finish in the 12th spot with a time of 17:37. Ethan Luurtsema was the next Sailor to cross the finish line in 14th place with a time of 17:43. Hendrick Nykamp battled to secure 15th place for the Sailors with a time of 17:44. Caleb Boes (18:05; 20th), Brandon DeVries (18:22; 25th), Ethan Sculley (18:34; 30th), and Lucas VanDam (18:44; 35th) made up the remaining varsity score.
The junior varsity boys team also finished in the 3rd position in the conference with a score of 59 points. The JV Sailors were led by Joseph VanderKooi, finishing in the 2nd spot with a personal-record time of 18:38. Ethan Koeman was the next Sailor to cross the finish line in the 11th position with a time of 19:31. Caleb DeVries was just 2 places behind in the 13th spot, finishing with a time of 19:32. Jared Winkle (19:34; 14th), Caleb VanderKooi (20:08; 20th), Roman Caulk (20:19; 22nd), and Garrett Schaaf (20:20; 23rd) rounded out the top seven finishers for the JV team.
The varsity girls team also finished in the 5th position with a score of 119 points, only 12 points behind conference rival Thornapple Kellogg. Abby Winkle led the Lady Sailors by racing to a 17th place finish with a time of 20:50. Mallory Huttenga was the next to finish for the varsity girls team in the 19th spot with a time of 20:53. Ellia Agar came in 26th place for SCHS with a time of 21:20. Lydia Tolsma (21:27; 27th), Emily Langerak (21:35; 30th), Carly Meulenberg (21:55; 34th), and Anna Orr (23:06; 40th) made up the remaining score for the varsity girls.
The junior varsity girls team finished in the 1st place position with a score of 34 points. Moriah Lanning ran an amazing race to finish in the 1st position with a time of 21:10. Carissa Springvloed finished next for the JV girls in the 4th spot, with a season best time of 22:16. Kelsey Harkema was the 3rd Sailor to cross the line in 7th place, running a time of 22:37. Jada VanTol (22:40; 9th), Natalie Bosma (23:04; 13th), Sarah Brinks (23:09; 15th), and Ashleigh Ponstein (23:22; 17th) rounded out the top seven for the girls JV team.
The South Christian Cross Country Varsity teams next race on Friday, October 23 at the MHSAA pre-regional with the hopes of advancing to regionals on Saturday, October 31. The JV teams will finish out their seasons on Saturday, October 24 at the Kalamazoo Christian School Invitational.
