South Christian High School was the setting for the 2020 MHSAA Pre-Regional meet. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the pre-regional or “district” meet was developed to reduce the number of teams competing at regionals. SCXC competed against runners from 7 other local teams from Region 13, with the top 4 advancing to regionals. The SC teams were focused, raced smart, and capitalized on their efforts.
The men’s varsity team finished in second place with a score of just 52 points to earn a spot at MHSAA Region 13 Championships next weekend. Senior Ethan Luurtsema led the way for the Sailors finishing in 7th place with a time of 17:55. Caleb Boes was next across the line in the 8th position running a time of 18:03. Hendrik Nykamp finished just behind Caleb in the 9th spot, earning a time of 18:06. Ethan Sculley (18:29; 16th), Lucas VanDam (18:38; 19th), Joseph VanderKooi (18:42; 22nd), and Brandon DeVries (18:58; 25th) all contributed to the varsity score.
The women’s varsity team also finished in second place, beating conference rival Thornapple Kellogg by just 6 points. This was the Lady Sailors first win over the Trojans all season! The women were led by freshman Mallory Huttenga who finished in 10th with a time of 20:58. Next across the line was freshman Ellia Agar in the 12th spot with a time of 21:09. Abby Winkle was the 3rd finisher for SC in the 13th spot with a time of 21:16. Despite a fall early in the race, senior Moriah Lanning finished in 15th place with a 21:32. Emily Langerak (21:43; 17th), Sarah Lanning (21:45; 18th), and Lydia Tolsma (21:58; 20th) made up the remaining varsity score.
Both the men’s and women’s varsity teams race at Otsego High School on Saturday, October 31 in the Region 13 Championships where they hope to extend their seasons and move on to the Division 2 State Finals.
