Season-long training and dedication paid off on Saturday, October 31 for the Sailor Cross Country Teams at the 2020 Regional Cross Country Championships at Otsego High School. Temperatures in the upper 30’s, sunshine, and excellent course conditions allowed numerous athletes to finish with lifetime personal records.
The men’s team ran one of their best races of the season, but fell short of qualifying for the state finals. The varsity men finished in 4th place with a score of 97 points–only 7 points behind Allegan, just narrowly missing the 3rd place state-qualifying spot. Sam Westra was the first to cross the finish line in the 16th position with a time of 17:01, a lifetime personal record. With his 16th place finish, Sam qualified for the state finals for the first time in his XC career. Next to finish for the Sailors was Ethan Luurtsema in the 17th position, running a PR time of 17:05. Ethan’s placement qualified him for the state finals as well. Caleb Boes ran a personal record time of 17:13 to finish close behind Ethan in the 21st spot. Hendrik Nykamp crossed the line in the 4th spot and in 24th place for SCHS with a time of 17:30. Lucas VanDam (17:40 *SR; 28th place), Brandon DeVries (17:50 *PR; 31st place), and Ethan Sculley (17:52 *PR; 32nd place) made up the remaining varsity score for the men.
The women’s varsity team finished in 3rd place behind Grand Rapids Christian and Otsego with a score of 98 points, just barely edging out conference rival TK for a state qualifying spot by just 5 points. Leading the way for the Lady Sailors was Mallory Huttenga who battled to a 16th place finish. Mallory ran a 20:03, an all-time personal record. Moriah Lanning was next to cross the finish line in the 19th position with a time of 20:13, a season record for her as well. The 3rd runner to cross the line for the Sailors was Ellia Agar who finished in the 20th position with a personal best time of 20:16. Next was Abby Winkle in the 21st position with a 20:18 with another personal record time for the ladies.
