The 2020 SCHS cross country season came to a close at the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals at Michigan International Speedway on Friday, November 6. Temperatures in the low 70’s, sunny skies, and a stiff breeze brought challenges for the athletes, but all were thrilled it wasn’t raining or snowing!
As a state qualifier for the second year in a row, the varsity girls entered the competition seeded in the 17th position out of 27 teams. Perseverance and grit allowed the Lady Sailors to finish in the 23rd spot with a score of 528 points, just ahead of Spring Lake. Leading the way for the ladies was senior Moriah Lanning. Moriah finished with a time of 21:10, in 126th place. The 2nd Sailor to cross the finish line in the 147th position, was junior Abby Winkle with a time of 21:23. Not far behind was freshman Mallory Huttenga who battled to finish in 170th place and ended with a time of 21:34. Sophomore Sarah Lanning was the 4th Sailor to step across the line at 21:38 and in the 166th spot. Sophomore Emily Langerak (21:41, 168th place), freshman Ellia Agar (21:48; 175th place) and sophomore Halle Overmire (22:00; 191st place) made up the remaining varsity score. The girls cross country team is hoping to improve upon this season’s times and take this season’s momentum into next year.
Sam Westra and Ethan Luurtsema represented the boys varsity team. While Sam had run at the state finals one other time in his career, it was a first for Ethan. Sam crossed the finish line with a time of 17:54 in the 146th position. Ethan finished with a time of 18:54 and in 211th place. Both Sam and Ethan represented the SC men’s cross country admirably and both athletes had fantastic seasons overall.
