On Tuesday, March 30, the SCHS track teams were back on the track for the first time since the spring of 2019. The Sailors traveled to Grand Rapids Christian High School to compete in the first dual meet of the season. With only one week of practice under their belts, both the men’s and women’s team were competitive.
The Sailor men lost to the Eagles, 88 – 44. Despite the score, there were some notable performances. Trevor Hansen finished 2nd in the 200 M, running a PR of 25.10 seconds. Boston Knapp also earned a 2nd place finish in the 400 M with a time of 56.16 seconds, a personal record as well. Hendrik Nykamp ran a 4:56.74 in the 1600 M, crossing the finish line in 3rd place. In the 3200 M event, Joseph VanderKooi ran to a 2nd place finish in 11:17.29 with Caleb Boes just behind in the 3rd spot with a time of 11:18.14. The Sailor men swept the 110 M hurdles with Matt Westendorp taking the first spot with a time of 20.75 seconds and Ethan Timmer taking the 2nd spot with a time of 21.57 seconds. Matt Westendorp also won the 300 M hurdles finishing with a time of 51.57 seconds. In the pole vault, Ethan Boomstra and Ethan Timmer took the 2nd and 3rd place positions with vaults of 10’6” and 9’. In the discus event, Jake Cashen finished in 2nd place with a throw of 97’2.” Gabriel Kisner finished in 3rd place with a throw of 87’6.” In the high jump, Caleb DeVries ended with a jump of 5 feet, landing him in 3rd place.
The women’s team was also unable to come up with a victory, losing 99 – 38. Some standout performances by the ladies included Abby Winkle’s win in the 200 M with a time of 28.81 seconds as well as a win in the 400 M, coming across the finish line with a time of 1:06.59. In the 800 M run, Brooklyn Springvloed finished in 3rd place with a time of 2:50.76. Mallory Huttenga dominated in the 100 M Hurdles, finishing in the top spot with a time of 18.51 seconds. The SCHS ladies also swept the 300 M hurdles with Mallory Huttenga finishing in first with a time of 52.56, Rachel Egler finishing in 2nd with a time of 1:03.19, and Gracie Patterson finishing in 3rd position with a time of 1:04.22. In the shot put, Adellia Allar threw 17’3.25” for a 2nd place finish and Hannah Roelofs ended in the 3rd position with a throw of 16 feet. Adellia Allar also earned a 3rd place finish in the discus with a throw of 37’7”. In the high jump, Abby Winkle jumped to a 2nd place finish with a height of 4’9”. In the pole vault Kylie Keller and Cadance Densborn ended in 2nd and 3rd place positions with vaults of 6’3”. In the long jump, Halle Overmire recorded a jump of 13’2.75” to finish in 3rd place.
The SCHS track teams next travel to Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Tuesday, April 13 where they will take on GRCC and Wayland Union in the first double dual OK Gold league meet of the season.
