Boys Swim Finishes Strong at Division 1 State Meet

The Fighting Scot sprinters were moving over the weekend in the Oakland University Aquatics Center pool. The Caledonia varsity boys’ swimming and diving team’s foursome of senior Ethan Snapper, sophomore Liam Schuurmans, senior Anders Foerch and freshman Hudson Kemper set the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay twice at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 1 Boys’ Swimming and Diving Finals. The team placed ninth in the preliminary heats Friday to qualify for Saturday’s B Consolation Final, finishing in 1 minute 26.84 seconds, and then dropped their record time to 1:26.79 to place 11th in Saturday’s finals. Two of those guys also qualified for the B Consolation Final in the 50-yard freestyle as Snapper placed 11th in the prelims of the race with a time of 21.68 seconds and Kemper was 16th in 22.02. Kemper beat out the 17th-place racer in the event by two hundredths of a second to earn the last of the 16 spots in Saturday’s medal races. Snapper dropped his time to 21.57 in Saturday’s final to place 11th and Kemper placed 14th in the race in 22.03. The Caledonia team of freshman Reid Cammet, senior Andrew Barnum, junior Brett DeJager and Snapper was 27th in the prelims of the 200-yard medley relay to open the state meet Friday with a time of 1:41.72. The preliminary races Friday also saw Foerch competing in the 50-yard freestyle; Kemper, Snapper and Foerch competing in the 100-yard freestyle; and Cammet racing in the 100-yard backstroke. Foerch, DeJager, Schuurmans and Kemper closed out Friday’s prelims with a 20th-place time of 2:19.11 in the 400-yard freestyle. The Caledonia team was 25th in the weekend’s final standings.
