Sailor Track Teams Open Conference Season Against Wayland and Thornapple Kellogg

By Becky Overmire | Apr 17, 2026 11:00 AM

Summer-like weather prevailed as the Sailors traveled to Middleville to take on the Trojans of Thornapple Kellogg and Wildcats of Wayland on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The South Christian boys’ squad showed plenty of heart on Tuesday evening, but struggled to find the win column, dropping contests to both Thornapple Kellogg and Wayland. The Sailors fell 75-62 in a hard-fought battle against the Trojans and were also stifled by a potent Wildcats team in a 91-46 loss. While the team scores favored the opposition, several Sailors delivered standout individual performances on the track. Senior Thad VanderLaan anchored the long-distance crew, capturing first place in the 3200m with a season-best of 10:46.17. The 1600m proved to be a South Christian showcase as freshman Hudson Kemper (4:51.89 PR) and junior Josiah Rozema (4:53.45 SB) locked up a 1-2 finish. Kemper wasn't finished there, however, doubling back to claim victory in the 800m with a time of 2:07.92. In the sprints and hurdles, sophomore Easton Raak powered his way to a second-place finish in the 400m Dash (51.62), while senior Daniel Egler clocked a season-best 42.87 to take second in the 300m Hurdles. To cap off the highlights, the 4x800 relay quartet of Trevor Helmholdt, Ben Vos, Rex Jackson, and VanderLaan dominated the field, crossing the line first in 8:50.27. The South Christian girls’ team split their dual meets this week, edging out Wayland in a 69-67 thriller while falling to a deep Thornapple Kellogg squad 82-55. The story of the meet was senior Chloe Rinzema, who pulled off a stunning "triple crown" in the sprints. Rinzema dominated the track, taking first place in the 100m (13.20 PR), 200m (26.89 PR), and the 400m (58.75 SB) in a spectacular display of speed and endurance. The Sailors were equally formidable in the distance events. Sophomore Tiffany DeMaagd captured the top spot in the 1600m (5:50.23) and returned to lead a 1-2 finish in the 800m alongside classmate Ava Oostema; both runners posted personal-best times of 2:31.73 and 2:42.53. Freshman standout Lily VanEyk added to the win column with a first-place finish in the 3200m (11:46.28), also teaming up with Annalise Wiltjer, Noelle Hulst, and Lydia Huisman to cruise to a victory in the 4x800m relay (10:30.44). The teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 18 at Unity Christian High School where they will compete in the Houseward Invitational.
