The South Christian Track & Field teams traveled to Unity Christian High School on Saturday, April 18, to compete in the Houseward Invitational, where they proved they could handle the "pure Michigan" weather shift this past Saturday. Swapping earlier summer-like weather for a cold, wet, and wind-whipped afternoon at Unity Christian High School, the Sailors battled a field of 15 Christian schools from the West Michigan area and beyond. The cold, wet, and windy conditions were a far cry from the summer-like weather experienced earlier in the week, but the Sailor teams competed well against some of the toughest competition of the season. The South Christian boys' team finished the day in 5th place with a total score of 51 points. Senior Ethan White stole the show in the 100m Dash. Despite the miserable conditions, he clocked a blistering 11.28 seconds—a new personal record—to take home 1st place. The 4x100m squad (Zondervan, White, Blackport, Raak) also bested the competition, finishing 1st with a time of 45.60. They are now less than a second away from the state qualifying mark. The momentum continued on the track with a string of top-five finishes. Sophomore Easton Raak powered through the 200m Dash to take 4th place with a time of 24.87. Over in the hurdles, senior John Onderlinde clocked a 16.83 in the 110m event to secure 5th, while distance specialist Thad VanderLaan shaved time off his season-best in the 1600m, crossing the finish line in 4:47 to claim 5th place. The Sailors' depth was on full display as several other athletes battled through the wind to secure scoring positions and personal milestones: Field Events: The High Jump crew had a huge day, led by Lukas Egler, who cleared 5’6” for 4th place. He was followed by John Onderlinde in 6th (5’ 4”) and Luke Onderlinde in 8th (5' 2”). Distance & Relays: The 4x800m relay team (Helmholdt, Vos, Kemper, and Jackson) fought for a 7th-place finish with a time of 8:55. In individual distance events, Josiah Rozema (3200m) and Rex Jackson (800m) both clocked season-best times of 10:24 and 2:10 to place 7th and 8th, respectively. Sprints & Hurdles: Along with his 200m dash, Easton Raak contributed to the team score with a 6th-place finish in the 100M dash (11.81) while John Onderlinde added an 8th-place finish in the 300m Hurdles (45.67) to his busy day of scoring. The South Christian girls' team displayed incredible grit, finishing 4th overall with 56 points—finishing a mere 5 points behind Indiana’s DeMotte Christian. The day was defined by powerhouse performances from the senior leadership and an exciting glimpse into the program’s future through a talented freshman class. Senior Chloe Rinzema was a force on the track. She dominated the 400m Dash, taking 1st place with a time of 1:00. She followed that up with a stellar performance in the 800m, finishing 2nd with a time of 2:26. Freshman Noah Lanning proved she is a name to watch in the sprint events. Lanning placed in two of the most competitive races of the day. Lanning was 3rd in the 200m Dash with a time of 28.54 and 6th in the 100m Dash with a time of 13.70. Finally, freshman Lily VanEyk had a very successful day on the track. Lily took 2nd place in the 1600m (5:35) and showed her endurance by returning to take 4th in the 3200m (11:41). Additional notable performances from the women include: Distance: Tiffany DeMaagd (So.): After competing in the 4x800m Relay earlier in the day, Tiffany clocked a 5:41 in the 1600m to secure 6th place. Hurdles: Gabriella Agar (Jr.): In the hurdles, Agar battled through the 300m event to earn a 5th-place finish with a time of 55.77.
