South Christian Sailors Varsity Lead Slips In Loss To Wayland Varsity Wildcats May 4, 2026 vs. Wayland Varsity Wildcats Monday's game against Wayland Varsity Wildcats was a heartbreaker for South Christian Sailors Varsity, as they lost the lead late in an 11-8 defeat. The game was tied at eight in the top of the eighth when Ludema (GVSU '26) homered to left field, scoring three runs. South Christian Sailors Varsity lost despite out-hitting Wayland Varsity Wildcats 12 to seven. Burgess led South Christian Sailors Varsity with three hits. Wayland Varsity Wildcats got on the board in the top of the first inning after Kositzky (Alpena '26) walked, and Carlson ('27) was struck by a pitch, each scoring one run. Burgess singled to center field, which helped South Christian Sailors Varsity tie the game at two in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second, Wayland Varsity Wildcats broke up the tie when Ludema (GVSU '26) drew a walk, scoring one run. Then a grand slam to center field by Kositzky (Alpena '26) followed to extend the lead to 7-2. A ground out by Dutkiewicz ('27) extended the Wayland Varsity Wildcats lead to 8-2 in the top of the third inning. South Christian Sailors Varsity tied the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a double by Schreur, a single by Fisk, and a single by Burgess. Ludema (GVSU '26) earned the win for Wayland Varsity Wildcats. The hurler surrendered 12 hits and eight runs (three earned) over eight innings, striking out 10 and walking none. VandenBerg took the loss for South Christian Sailors Varsity. The reliever went seven and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on six hits, striking out seven and walking five. Fisk started in the circle for South Christian Sailors Varsity. The right-handed pitcher surrendered one hit and two runs over one-third of an inning, striking out one and walking two. South Christian Sailors Varsity tallied 12 hits in the game. Burgess drove the middle of the lineup, leading South Christian Sailors Varsity with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 3-for-5 on the day. Schreur, Rusticus-Koning, and Padding each collected multiple hits for South Christian Sailors Varsity. Lown (Calvin '26) and Ludema (GVSU '26) each collected two hits for Wayland Varsity Wildcats. Ludema (GVSU '26) and Kositzky (Alpena '26) were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in four runs for Wayland Varsity Wildcats. Wayland Varsity Wildcats had patience at the plate, piling up seven walks for the game. Stallard (Glenn Oaks '26), Ludema (GVSU '26), and Kositzky (Alpena '26) led the team with two bases on balls each. Wayland Varsity Wildcats turned one double play in the game.
