Bob White Stadium in Middleville was the setting of the 2026 OK Gold Conference Championships on Friday, May 8. With mild temperatures and gentle winds, the atmosphere was primed for a historic night at the oval. Both the boys' and girls' squads rose to the occasion, shattering expectations with a staggering 36 lifetime personal records in individual events. The Lady Sailors came to compete, dominating many of the running events from the 400m dash on up! In a finish that came down to the final strides of the 1600m relay, the girls’ team secured a hard-fought second place—falling just short of the Thornapple Kellogg Trojans by a razor-thin margin of 138 to 138.5. It was a thrilling conclusion to a spectacular conference season, decided by a mere half-point! The Sailors’ dominance was fueled by a string of gold-medal performances. Lily VanEyk (9) was a force in the distance events, sweeping the 1,600m (5:24.82) and 3,200m (11:58.00) while adding a silver in the 800m. Isabelle Oostema (9) joined her on the podium in the 800m, taking the top spot with a personal-record time of 2:27.08. In the long sprints, Chloe Rinzema (12) ran a time of 58.12 to win the 400m dash and punch her ticket to the D2 state championships by meeting the early qualifier mark. Noah Lanning (9) followed closely for second place with a new personal record of 59.76. Ellie Pettinga spearheaded the effort in the throwing rings, delivering a standout performance in the discus. Pettinga threw for a lifetime personal record of 90’ 8.75” to secure 4th place and followed it up with a strong 5th-place finish in the shot put, posting a distance of 30’ 7”. The relay teams also performed, with the 4x800m squad of Gabriella Agar, Annalise Wiltjer, Ava Oostema, and Lydia Huisman capturing first place with a time of 10:24.86. To close the meet, the 4x400m relay team Noah Lanning, Julia Sherwood, Belle Oostema, and Chloe Rinzema delivered the performance of the night. Their time of 4:01.87 was a staggering 12-second improvement from their previous best, securing second place and an automatic bid to the D2 State Championships. With that performance, the Sailors officially put the rest of the state on notice: they now hold the third-fastest time in Division 2. The boys’ squad matched the girls' intensity, grinding out a second-place finish in both the meet and the OK Gold Conference with a strong 113-point showing. The highlight of the night belonged to senior Ethan White, who cemented his legacy by winning the 100m dash in a blistering 10.98 seconds. Not only did White’s performance secure an early bid to the D2 State Championships, but it also officially shattered the school record. Beyond the record-breaking sprint from White, the men’s squad saw dominant performances across the board. Senior Thad VanderLaan controlled the 3,200m run, taking first place with a season-best 10:14.26. He also played a pivotal role in the 4x800m relay, joining Rex Jackson, Josiah Rozema, and Hudson Kemper to claim gold in 8:17.42. The Sailors also found success in the hurdles and field, as Daniel Egler (12) notched two massive personal records, taking second in both the 300m hurdles (42.73) and the pole vault (13’0”). The future of the program looked equally bright, with sophomore Easton Raak taking second in the 400m dash (51.14) and freshman Hudson Kemper securing a silver of his own in the 800m run (2:04.64). The Sailors' success was officially recognized with a massive haul of postseason honors.
