The road to the state finals ran through Sparta High School on Saturday, May 16, and the South Christian Sailors rose to the occasion at the Region 13 Championships. In a spectacular display of depth and talent, the men’s and women’s teams rewrote the school record books, locked in multiple state-qualifying bids, and peaked at the perfect time with a long list of season-best performances. From explosive bursts on the straightaways to gritty finishes in the distance events, the South Christian boys’ track and field team left everything on the track Saturday at the Region 13 Championships, finishing in 6th place with a score of 54 points! The day was highlighted by standout performances from junior Ethan White and senior Daniel Egler, both of whom earned Regional Runner-Up honors in their respective events. Ethan White proved he is one of the fastest names in the region. After cruising through the 100-meter prelims with a time of 11.14 seconds, White blazed down the track in the finals to capture a 2nd-place podium finish in 11.16 seconds, once again locking in his spot at the state meet. Over at the field events, senior pole vaulter Daniel Egler rose to the occasion in dramatic fashion. Egler cleared a spectacular, personal-record height of 13' 2" to take 2nd place overall in the Pole Vault, securing a well-deserved ticket to the state finals. South Christian’s hurdle contingent proved to be one of the most dominant units of the day, packing the finals with multiple Sailors. In the 110m hurdles, senior John Onderlinde and junior Kaden Lenhart went toe-to-toe with the region's best. Both athletes clocked lifetime-bests when it mattered most, with Onderlinde taking 4th place (16.06, PB) and Lenhart following right behind in 5th place (16.52, PB). Onderlinde and Lenhart returned to the track for the 300m hurdles, where Onderlinde grabbed another podium spot in 8th place (43.83). Senior Daniel Egler added to the team score just behind him in 9th (44.03), while Lenhart completed the trio's impressive day in 10th (44.58). Freshman Hudson Kemper gave fans a glimpse of the program's bright future in the 800 meters. Running with veteran patience, Kemper fought his way to a 4th-place finish, clocking a phenomenal personal-best time of 2:00.88. In the longer distance events, junior Josiah Rozema put together a gritty performance in the 3200 meters, crossing the line in 6th place with a season-best time of 10:20.46. Senior Thad VanderLaan also put forth a strong effort in the 3200m, finishing 15th overall. The Sailors’ relay teams showed incredible chemistry and depth, placing in the top seven across all four events to keep the team score climbing. The 4x800m relay team of Kemper, Rozema, senior Rex Jackson, and VanderLaan set the tone early, battling their way to a 3rd-place finish in a swift 8:12.48, earning them a spot in the State Finals! The sprint relay 4x200m squad (Garrett Zondervan, Hudson VanNoord, Dax Blackport, Easton Raak) earned a fifth-place finish of 1:32.05, breaking the 30-year-old school record by a ½ second! The 4x400m squad (Raak, Trevor Helmholdt, Jackson, Kemper) also secured a strong 5th-place finish. Meanwhile, the 4x100m team (Blackport, Joel Brown, VanNoord, Zondervan) crossed the line in 7th. Beyond Egler’s stellar performance in the pole vault, the Sailors found success across the field. Junior Kaden Lenhart translated his hurdle speed into the long jump, leaping to a personal-record distance of 18' 11.75" to claim 7th place. Junior Garrett Zondervan also cracked the top ten in the event, finishing 10th (18' 1.25"). In the throws, freshman Dax Blackport pulled double duty, complementing his relay performance by tossing a personal-best 40' 1.25" in the shot put to place 9th. Sophomore David Liu also had a career day in the rings, throwing personal bests in both the shot put (35' 9.75") and a 13th-place finish in the discus (113' 7"). South Christian’s girls' squad combined for 96 points to take second place in the region, marking the team's most successful regional outing in over a decade! The tone for South Christian girls’ dominant day was set by the distance crew, starting with a masterclass performance in the 4x800m relay. The powerhouse quartet of freshman Lily VanEyk, sophomore Tiffany DeMaagd, freshman Isabelle Oostema, and senior Chloe Rinzema left the field in their dust, clocking a blistering 9:32.11 to capture the Regional Championship and bury the 20-year-old school record by over 5 seconds! But Rinzema wasn't done making statements. The senior leader went on to claim an individual crown in the 1600 meters, securing a first-place finish with a personal-best time of 5:12.48. The Sailors displayed incredible depth in the event, placing three others in the top ten: Tiffany DeMaagd took 6th (5:27.51), followed closely by freshman Annalise Wiltjer in 7th with a personal-best 5:37.20, and senior Lydia Huisman in 9th (5:40.17, PB). In the 3200 meters, freshman Lily VanEyk proved she belongs on the big stage with an exceptional 3rd-place finish (11:48.10), while Wiltjer capped off her gritty day by placing 8th. Freshman Noah Lanning put on a show in the 400-meter dash, exploding out of the blocks to capture the Regional Title with a phenomenal personal-record time of 59.74 seconds. She proved her versatility just a short time later in the 200-meter finals, battling headwinds to take 4th place overall with a personal-best 27.06. Lanning wasn't the only underclassman turning heads in the sprints. In the 400m, freshmen Isabelle Oostema (1:02.54) and Julia Sherwood (1:03.55) finished 4th and 6th, respectively, locking down three of the top six spots for South Christian. Meanwhile, freshman Noelle Hulst secured a 6th-place finish in the 200m finals after running a personal-best 28.12 in the prelims. In the hurdles, sophomore Kaelyn Plaisier stepped up big, fighting her way to a 5th-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a personal-record 18.46 seconds. Over on the 300m hurdles, junior Gabriella Agar secured a strong 7th-place finish (53.81). Out in the field, junior Lila Brown provided a major highlight in the long jump, flying to a personal-best distance of 14' 9.5" to lock up 6th place. In the rings, junior Ellie Pettinga anchored the throws crew by claiming 7th in the shot put (30' 6.25") and a strong 12th-place finish in the discus. The Sailors' depth was fully on display across the relay events. Beyond the victorious 4x800 team, South Christian swept 3rd-place honors in the 4x100m (Emily Bolt, Lila Brown, Lauryn Westhouse, Claire LeFebre), the 4x200m, and the 4x400m (Hulst, Jenna VanderLaan, Ava Oostema, Sherwood)—proving that the team's chemistry is hitting its peak at the exact right time!
