HAMILTON HIGH SCHOOL—It was a weekend of grit, personal records, and podium finishes for the Grand Rapids South Christian track and field teams as they wrapped up their season at the MHSAA Division 2 State Championships. Competing against the absolute best in Michigan, the Sailors leaned on a mix of senior leadership and fresh young talent to anchor a stellar showing. Senior standout Chloe Rinzema wrapped up her high school track career with an absolute masterclass of a weekend, figuring heavily into three separate all-state finishes for the South Christian women. Rinzema got things started individually in the 400 Meters, burning around the track to lock down a 3rd-place finish in the state. She crossed the line with a blazing, personal-record time of 57.53 seconds. But she wasn't done yet. Rinzema returned as the anchor leg for two stellar Sailor relay teams. The powerhouse trio of Noah Lanning (9), Julia Sherwood (10), and Isabelle Oostema (9) passed the baton flawlessly to Rinzema, who anchored the team to a phenomenal state runner-Up (2nd place) finish and new school record with a time of 3:56.97! This time also ranks this relay team 6th in the state across all divisions! Earlier in the day, the distance squad of Lily VanEyk (9), Tiffany DeMaagd (10), Oostema (9), and Rinzema fought their way onto the podium with an 8th-place finish, clocking in at 9:43.31. On the men's side, South Christian athletes went toe-to-toe with elite competition, highlighted by clutch performances in the field and on the track. Senior Daniel Egler went out on a high note in the Pole Vault. Climaxing a season of hard work, Egler cleared a lifetime personal best of 13 feet, 4 inches to secure 17th place in a highly competitive state field. On the track, senior Ethan White repped the Sailors in the 100-Meter Prelims, explosive out of the blocks to log an impressive 11.21 seconds (with a subtle 0.8 m/s tailwind), finishing 27th overall in the state. The men's 4x800 Relay team also left it all on the track. The contingent of Hudson Kemper (9), Rex Jackson (12), Josiah Rozema (11), and Thad VanderLaan (12) ran a fiercely competitive race, clocking a time of 8:12.70 to finish 12th in Michigan, after entering the race ranked 20th! Congratulations to all the Sailor athletes on a phenomenal season and a spectacular showing on the state's biggest stage!
