Wayland Middle School was the setting for the second OK Gold Jamboree of the season on Wednesday, September 25. Humid conditions, as well as rough terrain, made for challenging racing conditions. However, the Sailor athletes were motivated by their formidable competitors. The South Christian men’s team earned a first-place finish with a score of 29 points. The men’s team was led by junior Ben Verlin, who won the race with a time of 16:57. Senior Thad VanderLaan finished in 2nd place with a time of 17:19. Junior Josiah Rozema crossed the line in 4th place, running a time of 17:38. Freshmen Hudson Kemper (9th; 18:26) and Nate Zondervan (13th; 18:41) made up the remaining varsity score. The Sailor women also finished in first place with a score of just 21 points. The women’s team was led by Senior Chloe Rinzema, who won the race with a time of 20:12. Sophomore Tiffany DeMaagd finished in 2nd place with a time of 20:15. Freshman Lily VanEyk crossed the line in 3rd place with a time of 20:19. Freshman Noelle Hulst and senior Lydia Huisman finished in 7th and 8th places, running a times of 21:04 and 21:06 to make up the remaining varsity score.
