The Sailors traveled to Otsego High School to compete in the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday, September 27, 2025. The flat, well-groomed course zig-zagged in and out of wooded areas, making for a crowded field of competitors, but the men’s and women’s teams raced well and did their best to run towards the front of the pack. The Sailor teams faced the toughest competition of the season in Division 2 and most definitely rose to the challenge! Thirty-two Sailor athletes set personal records or season-best times! The men’s varsity team finished in 7th place with a score of 225 points–only 2 points behind the 6th place team of Paw Paw. Senior Thad VanderLaan led the men’s team, finishing in 28th place with a time of 16:34. Junior Ben Verlin was the next Sailor across the line in 39th place, running a season-best time of 16:56. Freshman Hudson Kemper was the 3rd SC finisher, running a personal-record time of 17:00 and finishing in 44th place. Junior Josiah Rozema (17:03; 48th place) and senior Rex Jackson (17:48 PR; 72nd place) were the 4th and 5th finishers for SCHS, making up the remaining varsity score. Freshmen Nate Zondervan and Logan Kelly were the 6th and 7th finishers for the varsity team, both running lifetime PRs of 17:57 and 18:03. The women’s varsity team finished in 4th place with a score of 135 points. Senior Chloe Rinzema led the way for the ladies, finishing in 14th place with an incredible personal-record time of 18:26! Sophomore Tiffany DeMaagd was the next to finish for the Sailors in 15th place, running an equally impressive personal-record time of 18:28! Freshman Lily VanEyk was the third finisher for the varsity team with a personal-best time of 19:27, in the 27th position. Freshmen Noelle Hulst (19:59.64 PR; 39th place) and Isabelle Oostema (19:57.87 PR; 40th place) were the 4th and 5th finishers to make up the remaining varsity score. The men’s junior varsity team raced competitively and finished in 7th place with a score of 207, just 1 point ahead of BC Harper Creek. Gage Roodvoets led the way for the men’s JV team, running a personal-record time of 19:10 and finishing in 21st place. Junior Tyler Buck finished next, in 22nd place, with a season-best time of 19:11. Third to finish for the JV team was senior Jackson Sytsma, running a PR time of 19:49, in 42nd place. Freshman Dylan Thome and senior Enoch Wang were the 4th and 5th finishers for the team, running personal-best times of 20:43 (69th place) and 21:32 (90th place).
