Multiple Teams · Sailors in District Final on Saturday October 18


On Monday October 13th the Sailors Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated Fennville 4-1 in the first round of the District.  Scoring for the Sailors were Than Thang (2) and Ryan Doornbos (2).  Picking up assists for the Sailors were Ty Brinks (2), and Brian Rottman.

On Wednesday October 15th, the Sailors defeated a solid Otsego team 2-0, knocking Otsego out of the state tournament for the 3rd straight year.  Ty Brinks took advantage of a defensive turn over and scored half way through the first half.  The score remained 1-0 at half.  Than Thang scored with 33 minutes left in the game on an assist from Brian Rottman.  The Sailors withstood a late barrage from Otsego to secure the 2-0 win.

The Sailors play Hopkins in the district final on Saturday October 18th at Comstock at 10:00 AM.  The Sailors record on the year is now 11-8-2.

Multiple Teams · Sailors Varsity Soccer Wraps up Season with Winning Record


The Sailors Varsity Soccer team defeated Thornapple Kellogg on Monday October 6th 2-0.  Scoring for the Sailors were Brian Rottman and Ryan Doornbos on a header with the assist from Ty Brinks.  The Sailors then defeated Wayland on Wednesday October 8th, 6-1.  Scoring for the Sailors were Sam DeVries, Ryan Doornbos (2), Ty Brinks, Than Thang and Christian Timmer on a header.  Assists went to Brian Rottman, Sam DeVries (2), Zack DeKock and Matt Hubbard.  On Friday the Sailors were defeated by Covenant Christian 6-0.

The Sailors final record in the regular season was 9-8-2.  The Sailors were 7-3 in the OK Gold, capturing 2nd place.

The Sailors play Fennville on Monday October 13th to open District play in Fennville at 6:00 PM.

Multiple Teams · Sailors Soccer Team moves into 2nd Place in the OK Gold


The Sailors varsity soccer team has won four conference matches in a row, propelling themselves into sole possession of second place in the OK Gold conference.

On Thursday September 25th, the Sailors defeated Grand Rapids Catholic Central 2-0.  Scoring for the Sailors were Ty Brinks and Dylan Huisman.  Oliver Weesner picked up an assist.

On Friday September 26th, the Sailors lost to Grand Rapids Christian 2-0.  In another non-conference match, the Sailors lost to Caledonia 1-0 on Monday September 29th.  The evening featured Coaches vs Cancer with many opportunities to raise money in the fight against Cancer.

On Tuesday September 30th, the Sailors defeated Ottawa Hills 5-0.  Scoring for the Sailors were Austin Clark, Zack DeKock, Sam DeVries (2) and Oliver Weesner.  Picking up assists for the Sailors were Ty Brinks, Isiah House and Christian Timmer.

On Thursday October 2nd, the Sailors defeated Hastings 3-1.  Scoring for the Sailors were Ty Brinks (2) and Christian Timmer.  Picking up assists were Sam DeVries and Than Thang.

In a season with many injuries and players moving around to new positions, the Sailors seem to be playing their best soccer of the season.  The Sailors are now 7-7-2 on the year and 5-3 in the OK Gold conference.  Their next match is Monday October 5th at home against Middleville.

The post season starts for the Sailors on Monday October 13th at Fennville.  The Sailors have played in the State Championship match the last two years, with a 1-1 record.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Football Meets Ottawa Hills in Clash of Top OK Gold Teams


 

Fresh off an impressive 41-14 beating of Catholic Central last week at Fifth Third Park, South Christian’s Varsity Football team returns home to meet Ottawa Hills at Byron Center High School.

Friday’s game time is 7pm.   Both teams are 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

The Sailors have won four straight over the Bengals.   A victory on Friday places South Christian clearly in the driver’s seat of the OK Gold Conference race.

Multiple Teams · Sailors Varsity Soccer Back on Winning Track


The Sailors recovered from a recent 2 match losing streak by beating Wayland 8-0 on Tuesday September 24.  The 8th goal came 28 minutes left ending the match early.  Scoring for the Sailors were Than Thang (2), Daniel Sculley (2), Ryan Doornbos, Ty Brinks, Dylan Huisman and Oliver Weesner.  Picking up assists for the Sailors were Brian Rottman, Dylan Huisman, Than Thang, David Hubbard, Carter Selvius and Ryan Doornbos.

Last week the Sailors lost to Hastings 1-0 and home and lost to Thornapple Kellogg 2-1 in Middleville.  Scoring the lone goal on the week was Austin Clark.

The Sailors are now 4-5-2 on the year and 2-3 in the Gold Conference.  The Sailors attempt to even the series against Grand Rapids Catholic Central at home on Thursday the 25th and then play a highly ranked Grand Rapids Christian team at home on Friday the 26th.  The Friday varsity match is early to allow the players and fans to get to Fifth Third Ballpark to watch the Sailors football team take on Catholic Central.

Multiple Teams · Football Seeks Second Straight Win in Front of Historic Crowd


 

After a 33-30 overtime win last week at Unity Christian, South Christian’s Varsity Football team looks for their second consecutive victory Friday night against Forest Hills Eastern at Byron Center High School.

Kickoff is set for 7pm.

Eastern enters the contest at 2-1 and features a high-scoring spread offense.    Both teams figure to throw the football a considerable amount.

Highlighting the night, is a halftime ceremony honoring the 50th anniversary of the 1964 South Christian football team — the school’s first-ever football squad.

The South Christian Sailors Varsity soccer team played three matches last week, winning two of them.  On Monday September 8th, the Sailors defeated Calvin Christian 4-0.  Scoring for the Sailors were Ty Brinks, Dylan Huisman, Than Thang and Oliver Weesner.

In their OK Gold opener on Tuesday September 9th, the Sailors looked flat in a 2-0 loss to Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

On Thursday September 9th, the Sailors rebounded with a strong victory over Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills 5-1.  Scoring for the Sailors were Than Thang (2), Sam DeVries (2), and Ryan Doornbos.  Jett DenHartigh picked up two assists.

The Sailors record is now 3-3-2, 1-1 in the OK Gold.

South Christian Varsity Football looks for its first victory of the season Friday night against Unity Christian.  The game  will be played at Jenison High School.  Kickoff is 7pm.

The unbeaten Crusaders own impressive wins over Allendale and Calvin Christian.  Last year, South Christian outgunned Unity 49-28.

Multiple Teams · Two Losses in Tough Stretch for Sailors Varsity Soccer


The Sailors Boys Varsity Soccer team lost two early season matches to talented foes.  Unity Christian and East Kentwood are among the best teams in the area and count some of the top players in West Michigan on their rosters.  On Wednesday August 27th the Sailors lost at home to Unity Christian 5-0.  On Thursday September 4th the Sailors defense stepped up their play in a loss to East Kentwood 3-0.  Goalie Carter Selvius had a very strong game, blocking many EK shots and keeping the score close all match.  The Sailors record is now 1-2-2.  Before conference play begins, the Sailors have one more non league against Calvin Christian at home on Monday September 8th at 6:45 PM.  Conference matches start on Tuesday September 9th at Catholic Central at 5:45 PM.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Football Home Opener Renews Rivalry with Caledonia


 

South Christian’s Varsity Football team opens the home portion of its schedule this Friday night against Caledonia.

The two schools have not met on the gridiron since 2011 when the Sailors edged the Scots 17-7 at Byron Center’s field.   Caledonia moved to the OK White Conference in 2012.

Caledonia began the 2014 season last week with an impressive 48-9 win over Battle Creek Harper Creek.  Meanwhile, South Christian fell, 28-14, in a hard-fought game at Grand Rapids Christian.

Kickoff at Byron Center is set for 7pm.
