In the Regional Final at Freemont High School, the Boys Varsity Basketball team took on GR Catholic Central in a rematch of last year’s Regional Final. In one of the best games of the year, both teams traded punches throughout with neither team leading by more than 4 points. CC held a 4 point lead right before the half until junior Tyler Buwalda hit a 3 at the buzzer to pull SC within 1 at halftime. South built a 4 point lead midway through the 4th quarter but Cougar senior Austin Braun made some big plays and hit clutch freethrows down the stretch, to tie the game at 62-62 with 11 seconds left. South got the ball to senior Conner Kok who hit a baseline jumper with 2 seconds remaining to give them the win and the Regional Championship. Kok led the Sailors with 20 points while fellow senior Peyton Vis scored 16. South held a +8 rebounding advantage and had 15 points off the bench. Next up is the Quarterfinals against long-time rival Unity Christian on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:00. The site is yet to be determined.
