South Christian’s Lady Sailors played their last game for the 2017-18 season on Thursday night in Grant against Muskegon Oak Ridge. South was hoping for a few more games, and though it looked as they may for a few fleeting moments, it was not to be. Both teams would come out firing as South would find themselves down 18-15 at the end of the 1st quarter. The scoring pace would slow in the 2nd quarter as both teams found it more difficult to put the ball in the basket. SC would cut the Oak Ridge lead to just two points, at 25-23, going into halftime. The 3rd quarter, which has normally been a big quarter for the Sailors, saw South’s cold shooting continue. Not the same would be said for their opponent, as South would find themselves down by 8 points going into the 4th quarter. Oak Ridge would stretch their lead to 11, but South was not about to go out with a whimper. SC would change up their defense and turn around the momentum of the game. The pressure defense would turn into offensive tempo for South, as the shots started to fall and they put Oak Ridge on the ropes. The Lady Sailors would see several chances to take the lead just miss as they found themselves down by one point with under a minute to play. This would change as Kenzie Selvius hit a corner three to put the Sailors up by two with less than 30 seconds to play. Unfortunately, what seemed like a victory that was meant to be was put on hold as Oak Ridge would tie the game on a shot that would roll in as the game clock expired. The overtime period would see South unable to capitalize on opportunities and the victory to be slip through their fingers as the night ended in a 64-59 loss. South’s four seniors, playing in their last games, would contribute in major ways as they had all season. Gabby Timmer led the way with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while Mariel Bruxvoort stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Selvius ended her season as the almost hero with 6 points, 7 boards and 5 assists and Beth Lanning would score just 2 points, but put up a big defensive effort in guarding Oak Ridge’s best player most of the night. Sydney Cleary would finish out the scoring for South with 13 to go with her 5 assists. South Christian finished the season at 19-5, with an OK Gold Conference title and District Championship to their credit. Thank you for all the enjoyable nights of basketball ladies!
