South traveled to Wayland Monday evening to square off against the hard-working Wildcats in the second meeting of the season. South registered a a shutout against Wayland and had to earn every minute of it. From the opening whistle until the final, Wayland did not back down and took their own attack right at the Sailors. South never allowed a chance from close range but Wayland registered plenty of shots from the edge of the box that could have made things different had they found the corners. South keeper Annika Zuverink did her part by placing herself in the right position all evening and holding on to the ball. Defenders Morgan Rottman, Cass Broekhuizen, Joz VanTol and Sydney Cleary blocked shots and cleared balls away to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Emma DeVries, on a pass from Kenz Selvius, had South’s first goal late in the first half as she blasted a shot over the keeper’s hands. South’s second goal came midway through the second half on another great feed from Selvius, a low pass across the box that Alyssa Visser one-timed into the left side of the goal. South continued to build well through the middle and pressed for one more goal but were unsuccessful. Wayland as well pushed forward right to the end. South got outstanding offensive effort tonight from Alayna Spiering and Emma DeVries and solid midfield support from Selvius, Savannah Bosselaar, Pam Osterhaven and Emma Pothoven.
South will next host the Eagles of GR Christian on Thursday.
