South Christian hosted the Wildcats from Wayland Thursday night and registered an important early conference victory. South struck first halfway through the first 40 on a nifty combination between Cassidy Broekhuizen and Kenz Selvius with Selvius finding the net from a well played touch pass from Broekhuizen. South carried a strong attack and midfield presence through the first half but found themselves just missing that final connecting pass and cross into the box. Credit Wayland’s strong defensive unit in the box for turning away the Sailors often. The second half brought a couple of adjustments in the attack and it proved beneficial just 3 minutes in as Selvius took a quick shot outside the box and caught the Wildcat keeper off her line with a lofting ball to give the Sailors the important 2-0 lead. Wayland did not back down the second half though and kept South working extra hard and focussed to defend the Wildcat counter attack. South again defended perfectly with efficient movement and coverage by anchor, Morgan Rottman, and the supporting cast of defenders, Cierra Gabrielse, Sydney Cleary and Savannah Bosselaar. Unrelenting midfield play of Selvius, Broekhuizen and Emma Pothoven provided a jump into Wayland’s defensive end that eventually wore down the Wildcats and produced the third Sailor goal with just under a minute to go. Selvius carried the ball over midfield and play a terrific through pass to a speeding Joz VanTol who tucked it in the left side of the net just past the keeper to make the final 3-0. A smartly-coached and respected Wayland squad showed determination and progress in their efforts this night despite falling short on the score board.
South will next travel to GR Christian for another conference match up on Monday, 6:15.
