South Christian’s girls basketball opened it’s season on Tuesday night hosting Hamilton. Playing their last game at the old gymnasium, the Lady Sailors were not able to come up with the outcome they desired. Facing a seasoned and talented Hamilton team, the youthful South squad came out and struggled to take care of the basketball and knock down shots. Hamilton jumped out to a 9 point lead at the end of the first quarter. With the help of some foul trouble, SC was able to cut the Hamilton lead to 24-19 at halftime. Unfortunately for the Sailors, Hamilton’s trapping defense continued to cause turnovers and Hamilton would push its lead back out to 12 by the end of the 3rd. The Lady Hawkeyes finished strong, defeating South 62-42. Sydney Cleary led the Sailors in scoring with 11 points, while freshman Sydney Vis and sophomore Taylor Newhof added 9 and 8 points respectively in their varsity debuts. Vis would lead the way on the boards for SC as she pulled down 14, while Kendra Kuiper and Emily Brinks hauled in 7 & 6 apiece. The Lady Sailors will travel to the newly remodeled Holland Civic Center on Friday to take on Holland Christian with a game time tipoff of 6:00pm.
