On a very warm evening in front of a great VanAndel Stadium crowd the South Christian Sailors pressed their way to the state semi-final with a shootout win over the equally determined Allegan Tigers. It was by far the most exciting yet taxing game of the 2019 season and after 2 halves and 2 overtime periods on a sweltering pitch, the Sailors found the calm will, stepped up, and buried all 5 PKs to advance. For those 100 minutes however, South looked every bit the team that they have all season – relentless, passionate, positive, creative, indefatigable. From the opening whistle to the final, the Sailors were unflinching in halting a dangerous Tiger attack that had produce a remarkable late season tournament run with multiple come-from-behind victories over some of the areas finest teams. In their typical stingy fashion, defenders Sydney Cleary, Morgan Rottman and Cierra Gabirelse snuffed any ideas the Tigers had of getting close to the Sailor goal and, along with senior keeper, Annika Zuverink, and the dogged work of the midfield, registered their 17th shutout of the season. Allegan did not have a shot on net the entire night and, except for two late opportunistic corner kicks, could not get into the Sailor 18 yard box.
On the offensive end as well it was again the work of midfielders that had such an impact on the match. Savannah Bosselaar, Erika Hofman, Sarrah Possett, Caitlin Bergsma, Chloe Dood, Cass Broekhuizen and Emma Pothoven kept the Sailor attack in motion all evening. South had many chances to score, getting into the Tiger box from all angles, but could get no closer than smacking the crossbar on a few attempts. The stellar Tiger keeper also made the difference, stopping an array of shots and never giving up a rebound. For both teams on this night, it was courage more than talent that mattered and it showed.
South travels to Cedar Springs on Tuesday for the state semi-final at 6pm.
