The South Christian Cross Country team had a home course advantage at the Christian School Invitational on Saturday, September 7, 2019. The team competed against 7 other area Christian schools, some traveling all the way from Illinois and Indiana. It was a perfect day for racing with temperatures in the mid 60’s at race time with partly-sunny skies. All teams raced extremely well, with numerous athletes earning both season-best times and all-time personal records.
The girls varsity team took third place behind Grand Rapids Christian and Grandville Calvin Christian with 111 points. The team was led by freshman Sarah Lanning coming in 12th with a time of 21:20.12 and freshman Lydia Tolsma just behind in 14th place with a time of 21:22.45.
The boys varsity team took fourth place with 103 points, edging out Grand Rapids Covenant Christian by only 5 points. The boys were led by senior Micah VanderKooi who finished in 9th place with a time of 17:19.37 and sophomore Lucas VanDam finishing 20th with a time of 18:03.18.
The girls junior varsity team came in first place with a score of 40 points. The JV team was led by freshman Halle Overmire who raced to a 4th place finish with a time of 22:45.43 and senior Rupa Charles just behind with a 5th place finish and a time of 22:55.51. Six SCHS junior varsity girls finished in the top 15!
The boys junior varsity team finished in 4th place with a score of 94 points. Jared Winkle battled to a 10th place finish with a time of 19:29.39 followed by Joseph VanderKooi in 22nd place with a time of 20:01.88.
