South traveled to EGR Monday evening to take on the Pioneers, former OK Gold league opponent. The windy, yet sunny evening was perfect weather for a match and it was closely contested throughout the 80 minutes. While the Sailors appeared to be more of a threat up top with speed and the always supportive Sailor midfield, EGR built a nice switching attack through the middle that South had difficulty containing much of the night. South managed to score first on a stellar through ball from Malia Kits to a leftward slashing Grace Wieneke who struck a pinpoint low screamer to the far right netting to finally finish after earlier close chances. South had other chances but the EGR back line and keeper were in the right spots to keep the ball out of the net.
With a little shift in the wind and change of halves the Pioneers upped their game the second half and kept the Sailor D on their heels at times. The bending but never breaking defensive backs Gabby Boersma, Jada VanTol, Jaideyn Koster, Emily VanderArk, Lexi Burgess and Tori Heyboer managed to clear balls away, step in for tackles and anything else they could do to get in the way of some very skilled EGR attackers. VanTol in particular was the anchor of the defense and covered just about every square inch of the defensive half to lead the defense. The Pioneers, to their credit, pressed more creatively the second half and had scoring chances however most were scooped up by Taylor Newhof or sailed just wide of the goal. It was midway through the second half when South got into the EGR box and delivered the insurance goal. A ball played across the box to Krysten VanSolkema saw VS put a good one time strike at the keeper and then follow up her own rebound with a similar shot low into the back of the next for the 2-0 lead. EGR never relented however and continued to play very well but were unable to register a goal. The Sailors earned the bagel and next set their sights on matches coming up in April after spring break.
