Women’s high school soccer has finally returned and it couldn’t have looked any better. Regardless of the outcome or even the run of play itself, the kids were back on the field and the enjoyment of teammates and the passion for the game was back in style. The Sailors hosted the always ready and well-coached Eagles from GRC and it was an exciting match from start to finish. No doubt both teams are young, practically brand new and shaking off some rust but the level of play was admirable and the fans were treated to exciting attacking and stout defending on both sides.
South had a couple of chances early down the wings and then managed to strike first when Stephanie Michmerhuizen found a ball in side the box and put it home for the Sailor lead. It was only a minute later that GRC answered to tie it up. South continued to press and with about 15 minutes to go in the first half, Michmerhuizen again found the back of the net on and assist from Grace Wieneke to put the home team up, 2-1. And again, GRC countered quickly, as their competitive nature would prompt them, and tied the game up with 12 minutes to go.
The second half saw back and forth play, however, South managed to register more shots and had terrific opportunities in the final 15 minutes from Wieneke, Michmerhuizen, and Katlyn VanderArk that sailed just wide or over top of the goal. GRC, with speedy forwards, was always dangerous on the attack and looked to take the lead on a break away only to be robbed of the goal by the terrific sliding foot save of left back, Tori Heyboer, as she cleared the ball off of the goal line at the last seecond.
The Sailor defensive backs, Gabby Boersma, Jada VanTol and Jaideyn Koster, Syd Vonk and Heyboer were busy all night and did a strong job of organizing the defense and protecting the box while midfielders, Chloe Dood, Amanda Ormstad and Ellie Johnson worked together to control the middle, change the point of attack and keep the offense alive. Michmerhuzen seemed to be everywhere offensively and had an outstanding first career varsity effort.
South next travels to EGR, Monday, March 29.
