The 2019 SCHS cross country season came to a close at the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, October 2. With temperatures in the upper 30’s, a moderate breeze, and a bit of rain and sleet, conditions were less than favorable. However, months of training more than prepared the Sailors for this event.
As a state qualifier for the first time since 2016, the varsity girls entered the competition seeded in the 20th position out of 28 teams. Perseverance and grit allowed the Lady Sailors to finish in the 19th spot with a score of 472 points, just behind Coldwater, a regional rival. Leading the way for the ladies was sophomore Abby Winkle. Abby finished with a time of 20:31.1, in 118th place out 247 runners. The 2nd Sailor to cross the finish line in the 137th position, was freshman Lydia Tolsma with a time of 20:41.1. Just on her heels was freshman Sarah Lanning who battled to a 138th place finish and ended with a time of 20:42.4. Junior Moriah Lanning was the 4th Sailor to step across the line at 20:46.4 and in the 142nd spot. Freshman Kelsey Harkema (21:03.2; 161st place), freshman Emily Langerak (21:07.4; 166th place) and junior Carly Meulenberg (21:38.1; 201st place) made up the remaining varsity score. The girls cross country team is looking forward to taking this season’s momentum into next year.
Micah VanderKooi represented the boys varsity team by making his 4th straight appearance at the MHSAA State Cross Country Finals on Saturday. He is the only male cross country athlete from South Christian to qualify for the state cross country finals all four years of high school. Micah crossed the finish line with a time of 17:08.4 in the 79th position to finish out his high school cross country career. Micah is looking forward to continuing his training throughout the winter in order to prepare for track season in the spring.
