A sure test with FHC on Tuesday night had it’s highs and lows. The Rangers are consistently one of the areas top girls programs so this first time match up was anticipated by the Sailors as a way of measuring themselves with one of the best. South was hesitant coming out of the gate and a couple of moments of lost focus resulted in nice 2 goals by the Rangers, a team sure to make you pay for those lapses. The Sailors regrouped and made a collective determination that they would concede nothing more and the result was some of the best soccer of the season, particularly the second half.
Both teams cautiously finished the first half after a serious injury to a Ranger player resulted in a 15 minute delay, however, the second half would be a different story for South as it made the “beautiful game” look just that. No doubt, FHC would be somewhat distracted and heartbroken after seeing their player injured but they found the resolve to play admirably and continued to challenge the Sailors. The Sailors were able to keep pressure on and move the ball creatively and finally were able to net a goal with under 10 minutes to go as the ferocious Grace Wieneke beat two defenders up the left side and slotted a forward pass perfectly to Joz VanTol who slipped it under the charging Ranger keeper for the lone second half goal. South almost tied the game in the closing seconds. Despite the 2-1 loss, the Sailors were pleased with the second half level of play.
South travels to Wyoming on Friday for a 5pm game.
