For the first time in several years, weather cooperated for the East Kentwood Invitational. Saturday’s double-header pitted South against Traverse City East and East Kentwood.
In the first game, Traverse City beat South with strong pitching and defense and many hard hit balls. After tying it up in the top of the second with RBI hits by Sydney Nyenhuis and Jess Memmelaar, South gave up six runs in the bottom of the inning and was never able to regain any momentum. The game was called after five innings with South down by ten.
In the second game South fell behind 3-0 but was able to answer in the bottom half of the first, stringing together four straight hits and scoring two runs. The Sailors added seven more in the second and never looked back, ending again in the 5th inning but this time on the happy end of mercy.
Every starter scored at least once in the game, with Kate DeMann scoring three of the team’s runs. Sydney Nyenhuis continued her torrid hitting, going 4-4 with two doubles, and Alyssa Barbrick went 3-4 while staying very busy on defense at third base. The outfield had an interesting time with the winds adding to the challenge of every fly ball, but they consistently came through. The bottom of the lineup was extremely productive with Josie Vink, Jess Memmelaar and Kinsey Brinkert all going 3-4. Brinkert was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
South has home games this week on Tuesday and Thursday.
